Follow proper process before using privilege

Follow proper process before using privilege, says Maharey

Social Services and Employment Minister Steve Maharey says he is shocked at threats made by ACT MP Deborah Coddington to name social workers and others using the protection of Parliamentary privilege without getting her facts checked.

Under priviledge Ms Coddington claimed in Parliament this afternoon that Child, Youth and Family is seeking to have two children placed in a family environment that includes a convicted sex offender. Child, Youth and Family have confirmed that the children are currently being looked after by caregivers and no further placement will be made which puts them at risk.

Steve Maharey said Deborah Coddington is abusing Parliamentary privilege.

“It is important for Members of Parliament to check their facts before they make allegations in Parliament. To not do so is an abuse of privilege.

“Deborah Coddington chose not to discuss this case with either Child, Youth or Family or me before she raised it in the House. If her intention is simply to keep children safe, she has chosen a method that can only result in them being placed under further stress.

“A simple check would have revealed that these children are safe and Child, Youth and Family intend keeping them safe.

“Ms Coddington says she plans to raise other cases in the future and threatens to name social workers and others. I hope that she chooses to check her facts before rushing to the House with misleading comments,” Steve Maharey said.
