O'Connor welcomes Waiho resolution
West Coast-Tasman MP Damien
O'Connor welcomed today's resolution between Civil Defence
and Franz Josef businesses about the Waiho
River.
Following the issuing of a civil defence hazard warning last Friday, meetings were held in Hokitika this week with Environment Minister Marian Hobbs, Civil Defence Minister George Hawkins, central and local government officials, accommodation operators and landowners.
Mr O'Connor said he was delighted that through sitting down together and thrashing out the issues, the parties involved were able to come up with a solution that suited all sides and ensured the safety of residents and visitors.
"This is what partnership is all about. I congratulate those involved."
Mr O'Connor said today's resolution would enable businesses to trade through the peak tourist season without damaging their livelihoods.
