Rushed legislation on rotting homes crisis

Rushed legislation on rotting homes crisis

National’s Housing spokesman, Wayne Mapp, says the Government’s u-turn on the rotting homes fiasco has seen it trying to rush through hasty legislation this afternoon to set up a Weathertight Homes Resolution Service.

“Just weeks ago, the Government was washing its hands of the problems of homeowners. This afternoon, it tabled a 37-page supplementary order paper to the Construction Contracts Bill, only hours before it was intended to pass into law.

“Ramming legislation through all its stages without consultation with a select committee shows just how unconnected the Government is with the seriousness of this problem.

“National proposed this very type of weathertightness service in an SOP back in October. But the Government refused to face the facts, and instead spent seven weeks hedging around the issue hoping everyone else would take the rap.

“If it had accepted our proposal then, it could have gone through the select committee process with proper consultation.

“But what we’ve now got is rushed legislation without consultation – the Government couldn’t even get that right,” says Dr Mapp.
