Remarkable Woman Retires

ACT New Zealand Education Spokesman Donna Awatere Huata today paid tribute to retiring Te Kohanga Reo Trust Chief Executive and fellow ACT foundation member Iri Tawhiwhirangi.

"Iri's commitment, energy and contributions to improving Maori education opportunities were instrumental in the development of Maori education and te reo Maori.

"A pioneer of school choice, Iri increased Maori participation in early childhood education, and was a leader in the battle to keep the Maori language alive.

"Without Iri's shared vision, many Maori would not have gained the quality education they sought. Her tireless dedication and passion have shown Maori what their initiative can achieve for both themselves, and their children.

"I am proud to call Iri my auntie. A great leader for Maoridom, and long-standing friend to ACT, Iri has helped provided education opportunities for future generations of Maori," said Mrs Awatere Huata.
