United Future Misleads the Public

United Future MPs need to put the brakes on their unseemly haste to support the Labour Government on absolutely anything and everything, ACT Transport Spokesman Deborah Coddington said today.

"This rush to dance to Labour's tune has seen United Future MP Paul Adams put himself in the unfortunate position of misleading New Zealanders.

"Mr Adams, a former car salesman, slated me last week for writing to everyone in the motor vehicle industry and explaining why ACT would not support the Motor Vehicle Sales Bill. ACT's main reason was the allowance for an extra tax that Judith Tizard slipped in via a Supplementary Order Paper. This tax is not, as Mr Adams asserts, to fund the fidelity fund, but rather to fund the Disputes Tribunal. This will effectively punish the good dealers (the majority) at the expense of the bad dealers.

"Instead of attacking me, perhaps Mr Adams should explain why he is supporting this increased tax on business. The industry does not support this tax, as the overwhelming response to my letter has indicated.

"Just because the legislation regarding motor vehicle sales needed overhauling - which ACT agrees it did - does not allow this Government to take advantage of an industry it looks down its nose at.

"We may be a lone voice, but we will continue to fight against this tax on behalf of the business owners out there who need a new tax like they need a hole in the head," Miss Coddington said.
