New law sends message to illegal street racers
Transport Minister Paul Swain welcomed the passage last night of the Land Transport (Street and Illegal Drag Racing) Amendment Bill.
“The bill sends a clear message to illegal street racers that reckless behaviour on our roads will not be tolerated,” said Mr Swain. “Overseas experience has shown that the most effective way to deter illegal street racing is to target the racers’ pride and joy – their cars. Police will now have the power to impound a vehicle for 28 days where there are reasonable grounds to believe that a street racing offence has been committed.
“I’d like to
congratulate Waimakariri MP Clayton Cosgrove for introducing
the bill into Parliament and thank the other parties that
supported the bill,” said Mr
Swain.
