Mailbox Tribalism Runs Rampant

New Zealand First leader Rt Hon Winston Peters has called for an end to litigation over Treaty of Waitangi fisheries allocation so that settlement can be funded.

The Treaty grievances industry is gearing up for another round of expensive legalistic procrastination at the expense of all other New Zealanders.

“Present arguments over the adequacy of urban Maori entitlement are specious. This is a case of mailbox tribalism – shift your mailbox, shift your tribe. Urban entitlement does not exist so any allocation on that basis can not be fair,” said Mr Peters.

“The last thing New Zealanders want or need is for the likes of Graham Latimer doing another Crown Forestry Rental Trust with the fisheries resources.

“The Forestry Trust has sat on its assets and last year succeeded in making settlements of $2.5 million whilst swallowing up $16 million themselves.

“Do we want more of that?” asked Mr Peters.
