Ron Mark Seeks Home Detention

Media Release

17 April 2003

Ron Mark Seeks Home Detention

New Zealand First’s law and order spokesman Ron Mark has requested that he be considered for home detention.

“Criminals on home detention are legally entitled to drink alcohol, vote, and gamble from their homes. In addition some home detainees are being given ’leave’ to go to the gym and attend rugby matches and other entertainment. It’s a better life than most of us achieve,” Mr Mark said.

“Worse, when one considers the nature of the offences of some of these home detainees one no longer wonders why crime is New Zealand’s fastest growth industry. Crimes listed include aggravated robbery with a rifle, assault on a child with a firearm, kidnapping, drugs supplying, rape, and all sorts of burglary and aggravated robbery!”

“If this is what the Government means by getting tough on criminals then roll me over and slap me with a wet bus ticket. Someone who assaults a child with a firearm can serve their sentence at home, and probably get leave to wander of to the gym or the footie? Give us a break!” said Mr Mark.
