Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)

The subcommittee will meet on Wednesday, 30 April at 9.00 am to consider the inquiry into decile funding in New Zealand State and integrated schools.

The whole committee will meet on Wednesday, 30 April at 10.00 am to consider the 2001/02 financial reviews of the Teacher Registration Board, the New Zealand Teachers Council, the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, and Early Childhood Development. The committee will also hear evidence on the inquiry into teacher education.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s next meeting will be on 7 May.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will not meet until Wednesday, 30 April when it plans to consider the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill, the Independent Police Complaints Authority Amendment Bill and the Telecommunications (Interception Capability) Bill, a petition and some general business.

The committee is currently seeking submissions on the Corrections Bill. The closing date for submissions is Wednesday, 21 May 2003. This bill provides a new legal framework for the corrections system, which covers the administration of custodial sentences and remands, community-based sentences, home detention, and parole.

Standing Orders (David Bagnall, SC-SO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will hear evidence from United Future New Zealand on the review of Standing Orders. The committee will then further consider that review in closed session, along with the review of services provided to select committees.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on the afternoon of Wednesday, 30 April from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm and then the following day from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm to hear the last of the oral submissions on the Land Transport Management Bill and the Road Traffic Reduction Bill. Both meetings will be open to the public while submissions are heard.

Te Pāti Māori: Māori Unemployment Rate Increases By More Than Four-Times National Rates

In figures released yesterday from Statistics New Zealand, unemployment rates for Māori hit a four-year high of 8.2%, up by 1.4%. Similarly, rates for Pacific peoples have surged by 1.5% to reach 7.4%. “These figures are an absolute embarrassment for this government with increasing unemployment under their watch,” said Employment spokesperson, Takutai Tarsh Kemp.

Government: Streamlining Building Consent Changes

The Government is making it easier for minor changes to be made to a building consent so building a home is easier and more affordable, Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk says. “The coalition Government is focused on making it easier and cheaper to build homes so we can rebuild the economy and get Kiwis into homes faster,” Mr Penk says.
