Ewen-Street steps down from scampi inquiry

Ian Ewen-Street MP, Green Party Agriculture Spokesperson

1st May 2003

Green MP, Ian Ewen-Street has stepped down from the Primary Production Select Committee inquiry into the scampi fishery because of his concern that a change in his personal circumstances could be perceived as a conflict of interest.

Ian yesterday advised the committee that since the last meeting he had developed a friendship with one of the lawyers representing Barine Investments Ltd.

Ian had earlier notified David McGee QC, Clerk of the House of the potential for a conflict of interest. Ian was advised that he should remain on the committee for consideration and deliberation on the inquiry, but should not to participate in any consideration or deliberation which may have direct benefit to Barine Investments Ltd.

However, after reflection on the importance of maintaining public confidence in the select committee inquiry process, Ian has decided to take no further part in the scampi inquiry, as of today.
