Alexander: Naming another blow for victims

Alexander: Naming another blow for victims

The naming of the alleged kidnapping victim at the centre of an ongoing High Court trial in Wellington is yet another example of victims not getting rights that are all too often afforded to criminals, United Future law and order spokesman Marc Alexander said today.

"It's just crazy. The individual concerned in this case has done nothing wrong, and his naming achieved nothing at all, especially when it was so clearly and explicitly against his will.

"Can anyone stand up and say justice has been advanced one iota by exposing this individual to unwanted publicity?" Mr Alexander asked.

"And yet try to name a criminal, try to name the morons who trashed a Christchurch charitable trust's house and see where you get.

"What passes for privacy in this country is a joke.

"Just how much consideration has been given to the fact that the individual named yesterday has gone through enough having to deal with the personal impact of knowing that he was possibly at very considerable risk.

"It would carry an emotional and psychological burden that is not respected by the court's decision. It is simply wrong," he said.
