United Future Maori affairs spokesman, Murray Smith, and education spokesman, Bernie Ogilvy, today strongly criticised the government for refusing to assist the expansion of Carich Computer Education, the country's largest Private Training Establishment.
"This is a highly successful, internationally-recognised company with hundreds of staff teaching thousands of students and which is expanding its business into countries such as South Africa and China," said the MP's.
"Yet neither Education Minister Trevor Mallard nor Tertiary Education Minister Steve Maharey will even agree to meet the company or discuss its funding requests.
"Refusing to acknowledge or help a New Zealand success story simply flies in the face of commonsense and we can only conclude this absurdity arises from Labour's blinkered ideological approach to the private provision of education.
"Carich has 2000 New Zealand students on its waiting list as well as growing interest from overseas students and we call on the government, if it's not going to help, to at least get out of the way," said the two MP's.
