Health boss loss to Auckland and health

The resignation of Auckland District Health Board's long-serving chief executive Graeme Edmond is a huge loss, says National Associate Health Spokesperson Judith Collins.

"This is being put down to a clash with the board. The problem is that majority elected district health boards just aren't working.

"This is the fifth chief executive to leave a health board in the past 18 months, with others leaving Hawkes Bay, South Auckland, Northland and Dunedin. These chiefs are quitting in frustration, they are just giving up because it is too hard.

"Graeme Edmond did a fantastic job with the Auckland DHB. When National left Government he had bought the board back into the black.

"The last couple of years he has had to battle a huge and growing deficit as well as his chairman and board in trying to run the health services. His resignation reflects the underlying problem in elected boards. He will be a big loss," Ms Collins said.
