New Zealand First family affairs spokesperson Barbara Stewart said Labour seems to be suffering from a lack of identity after it announced the new ‘Job Jolt’ policy.

“This smells suspiciously like a National or Act type policy,” said Mrs Stewart.

“Work-testing the 55-59-year-old age group is ridiculous and humiliating for those involved. You are talking about a group of people who are unlikely, due to society’s bias, to get another job before retirement age.

“Where do they propose housing the people from the country moving to the city? Auckland is overcrowded and suffering from a housing shortage already without bringing more people into the city.

“This is simply an attempt by Steve Maharey to make the Government look like they are being tough on the unemployed because he is seeking to hide increasing unemployment.

“It is obvious that the economy and this Government are on their way down and the 55-59-year-olds are this week’s scapegoat.

“New Zealand First promoted the community wage scheme which would have enabled those in the 55-59-year bracket to develop new work skills whilst retaining their dignity.

“Labour lambasted that policy and now have come up with a jack-booter, Roger Douglas type solution,” said Mrs Stewart.
