Maternity services in New Zealand are under siege as a result of general practitioners fleeing the service and foreign mothers coming here to give birth said New Zealand First family affairs spokesperson Barbara Stewart.

“With women coming in from overseas to give birth so their children can get a free education on the New Zealand taxpayer and underfunding of essential services at many hospitals we are being faced with a serious problem,” said Mrs Stewart.

“Whatever the reasons it is disgraceful that a North Shore mother was required to travel by private vehicle across the city to a private clinic only two hours after giving birth in a public hospital.

“The system is crumbling under the weight of competing pressures for resources and it is time for the Government to take action and put the health of our mothers and children first,” said Mrs Stewart.
