Doc Killing More Weka

Media Release

Doc Killing More Weka

New Zealand First is appalled that the Department of Conservation can ruthlessly kill off hundreds of eastern buff weka without any public consultation.

The birds, which were trapped and then bashed on the head, are killed by DoC to protect two endangered species on the Chatham Islands, the taiko, and the Chatham Islands oystercatcher.

“This weak justification for killing weka on the Chatham Islands is pathetic given that relocation of these birds would be a much more humane way of dealing with the problem, said New Zealand First spokesperson for Conservation, Edwin Perry.

“Too often the Department of Conservation is playing God with our natural habitat, such as its failure to consult with local communities and Maori over our Marine reserves.

“We need to put our foot down now and stop the Department of Conservation’s arrogance in thinking it can do whatever it likes with our environment,” said Mr Perry.
