Changes Overdue At Radio NZ
New Zealand First has welcomed the appointment of a new chief executive at Radio New Zealand saying that standards at the state broadcaster have seriously plummeted in recent years.
“Hopefully they have come up with the right person to lift standards and improve the relevance and level of service,” said Leader and broadcasting spokesman Winston Peters.
“It won’t be an easy task as the quality of news and current affairs coverage has suffered as a result of infighting amongst the management and budget restrictions. It will take a particularly vigorous new broom to sweep the skeletons out of the RNZ closet and bury them.
“There is an opportunity to broaden the scope and accessibility of the Concert FM network and to improve RNZ’s international services as well as to seriously address staffing, balance, and quality issues at National Radio.
“Free and open communications is
the foundation of the democratic state – the potential of
the role played by state broadcasters is such that we can
longer accept the second rate service that has been
provided,” said Mr.
Peters.
