Doctor leaving loss to public health

Doctor leaving loss to public health

The resignation of Middlemore plastic surgeon Cary Mellows is a tragedy for not only Auckland but all of New Zealand, says National MP and former consultant gynaecologist Dr Paul Hutchison.

"Knowing Dr Mellows for many years I am aware he has been very committed to the public health service, and it would only take huge frustration for him to leave.

"The plastics unit at Middlemore is world famous, it has an unparalleled international reputation and Cary Mellows contribution has been significant to this.

"His leaving illustrates the problems in the health system where Labour has created a huge central bureaucracy that sucking up money but not delivering patient services. This inefficient bureaucracy, tied up in 21 district health boards, is a major reason patients can't get services," Dr Hutchison said.

Dr Hutchison has worked at Middlemore Hospital.
