Broken Promises Haunt Labour

New Zealand First is asking the Government what it plans to do about the Maori occupation of the Department of Conservation’s house north of Wanganui in protest to failed promises of the 1987 Labour Government.

“Sixteen years ago Labour promised to establish Pipiriki as the headquarters of the Whanganui National Park to create jobs and prosperity but nothing has been done,” said Maori Affairs spokesperson, Bill Gudgeon.

“Why does Labour consistently make promises they have no intention of keeping?

“Nothing has been done to implement management jobs, or teach locals new skills. All they have done is dig a ditch and relocate the toilets.

“It has now got to the point that people are resorting to illegal occupation of Crown property to make the Government take notice of what they have to say.

“I tell the hapu of Ngati Kurawhatia, or all Maori for that matter, to think twice before you vote next time,” said Mr Gudgeon.
