Government Should Appoint Transport Overlord

''I agree with Brian Rudman wholeheartedly when he says that the Government should appoint a Transport overlord, charged with banging local body heads together,'' said Dail Jones MP, New Zealand First, in response to the New Zealand Herald article on Wednesday 25 February 2004.

“When Auckland had its electricity crisis some time ago, a leading Auckland lawyer
suggested a Roman style dictator should be appointed to resolve the problem which was drifting on endlessly.”

“The problems we are now experiencing with transport both on the roads and public transport are reaching similar proportions in an Auckland-wide sense”, said Dail Jones.

“Aucklanders are looking for positive action reducing day-by-day congestion.

“Unless Auckland local body bureaucrats desist from their endless talking and report writing I will be asking New Zealand First to call for a full Ministry for Auckland, which will have adequate funding, and legislative powers to resolve Auckland’s long-term inability to manage its transport problems,” concluded Mr Jones.
