Government puts squeeze on physiotherapists

The Government is determined to stop physiotherapists charging a fee except in restricted circumstances. This is a classic example of control politics, and many practices may face financial ruin as a result, says National ACC spokesperson, Dr. Paul Hutchison.

The 'Endorsed Provider Network', due to commence on 1 April does not take into consideration the fact that costs to providers are not even across the country. "To make matters worse, the new fees are reviewed according to the 'All Labour Index', which does not consider disparities in costs across the country - such as rent, equipment and development," says Dr Hutchison.

"Physiotherapists who do not choose the new scheme will find it difficult to compete with a fully funded 'free' system. For them, it's a lose-lose situation.

"This is a continuum of Ruth Dyson's effort to impose a system under which small business must be dependent on the government. Eventually it will lead to a fully salaried system with no choice, queuing, and poorer patient care."
