Extra Security Move Welcomed

New Zealand First welcomes the Prime Minister’s comments today that the Government is prepared to review the extra charges proposed in the Border Security Bill which is about to come before the House.

“This came in reply to questions I asked in the House today,” said New Zealand First transport spokesperson, Peter Brown.

Under the Bill these additional charges, estimated to be close to $20 million, will have to be paid by the carriers, ships and aircraft in the first instance, with the view that the cost be passed on to importers and exporters.

“New Zealand First has always been of the opinion that border security is a cost that should be met by the State because it is there to protect us all,” said Mr Brown.

“It was pleasing to note from my questions in the House to the Prime Minister that she has recognized our concerns as being legitimate and is giving the matter serious consideration.

“This should please the carriers as well as our exporters and importers,” said Mr Brown.
