Seize Assets Of Shellfish Black Marketers Says Mark

Immigrants involved in black market päua rackets should have their assets seized, according to New Zealand First law and order spokesperson Ron Mark.

This follows Ministry of Fisheries raids on three Christchurch businesses and breaking what officials say is an illegal päua trading ring and a thriving black market catering for Asian tour groups.

“The black market trade in paua and rock lobster is thriving and the coastline is getting stripped in the process,” said Mr Mark.

“In almost every case there are shadowy Asian figures in the background.

“The last time there was a major bust the offenders, including the Asians at the top, escaped punishment because of technical problems with the law they were prosecuted under.

“It is time to get tough with these undesirables who come here and loot and plunder at New Zealand’s expense. They are making millions and laughing at us in the process.

“Part of the punishment should be stripping them of their assets to help pay heavy fines, and very long jail terms.

“The individuals who organise the tours that promise these seafood delicacies should also be targeted. They are helping create demand for the black market shellfish and lobster,” said Mr Mark.
