Govt’s plans ‘right to roam’ in sheep’s clothing

The Government’s plans to allow unfettered public access 20 metres either side of waterways is ‘right to roam’ in sheep’s clothing, says National’s Agriculture spokesman, David Carter.

Agriculture Minister Jim Sutton has promised farmers the Government will not introduce ‘right to roam’ provisions.

Mr Carter says this is an empty promise.

“It will be almost impossible for trampers to stick within the 20 metre strip.

“Does the Government expect trampers to carry tape measures with them to ensure they don’t stray? Or do they expect farmers to mark the border with white paint?

“The Government’s plans are a lose-lose for farmers and the public.

“Farmers personal safety, property, and livestock will be vulnerable to thugs using the provision to trespass at will. And, by not requiring the public to consult with farmers, trampers may expose themselves to unnecessary on-farm dangers,” Mr Carter says.
