National targets Tauranga

Don Brash MP - National Party Leader

National targets Tauranga

National Party Leader Don Brash says National has the best chance for years of winning back the Tauranga seat in next year's election.

He was speaking this evening at the campaign launch of National's candidate, local business identity Bob Clarkson.

"Tauranga is a natural National seat, and Bob Clarkson has a wonderful chance of winning it," Dr Brash says. "He has done much for Tauranga already and will do more when he is the MP.

"Many in Tauranga, I am sure, will be disappointed with the representation they are getting from the current member.

"He seems to have given up the battle to get the Labour Government out of office - and is now working hard to make sure they stay in.

"Take a look at what he did over the Foreshore and Seabed Bill. He sided with Labour and in doing so has helped sell us into a world of increased racial tension, division and dissent.

"It is understandable if the people of Tauranga are surprised and saddened by their local MP's change of heart.

"National is increasingly of the view that a vote for Winston Peters is a vote for Labour.

"He was referred to in the House the other day as Labour's doormat - they are walking all over him," Dr Brash says.

"But I believe the people of Tauranga are beginning to see through this and are ready to send a message to Labour and those bidding to be its bedmates - and I am confident they will do that through Bob Clarkson and National."
