Inquiry inadequate says Smith

Nelson MP Nick Smith says he is not satisfied with the handling of the Health and Disability Commissioner's review of the handling of the Nelson case involving the death of a five-month-old disabled child.

"Neither I nor the family is satisfied that the concerns have been adequately addressed. The family is emotionally exhausted, and they want the tragedy put behind them.

"I want the matter regarding the coordination of services between Nelson and Christchurch hospitals properly addressed. This matter has not been inquired into, but needs to be.

"Too often, as in this case, constituents fall between the cracks of different hospitals.

"Today I formally wrote to the Health and Disability Commissioner asking for a proper investigation, into the coordination of services between hospitals, given its failure to do so so far. I have the full support of the family concerned in doing this.

"I am more interested in a thorough inquiry than a quick inquiry.

"I want to be reassured that no other family will be put in this awful situation again," says Dr Smith.
