New appointments to TELARC

Commerce Minister Margaret Wilson today announced the appointment of Dr Geoffrey Page as the Chair of the Testing Laboratory Registration Council.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr Page back to the TELARC following his previous services as board member from 1992 and 2001," Margaret Wilson said.

Margaret Wilson also announced the re-appointment of Miriam Rose Dean and the appointment of two new members, Dr Richard Janes and Nigel Keith Cann, to the Council.

“These appointees will bring a depth of knowledge and mix of experience to the Council," Margaret Wilson said.

“I would also like to thank outgoing Chair John Buckingham and members Kevin Lysaght and Colin Martin for their commitment and contributions.”

TELARC, through its operational arm, International Accreditation New Zealand is responsible for the accreditation of testing laboratories, radiology services, and inspection services. The Council also owns Telarc Ltd, which undertakes management system certification activities.

BIOGRAPHIES

Dr Geoffrey Page

Dr Page has 16 years experience on government and private sector boards in New Zealand and Australia with particular knowledge of TELARC. He is currently the Chief Executive of Manukau Institute of Technology. Prior to this, he was the Managing Director of Anutech Pty Ltd, the commercial arm of the Australian National University. He has served as Chair of Fertility Control Ltd, Iliad Chemicals Pty Ltd, Materials Performance Technologies Pty Ltd and was the Chief Executive of Industrial Research Ltd and the NZ Dairy Research Institute.

Miriam Rose Dean QC

Miriam Dean has been re-appointed for a second term on the Council. Ms Dean is a senior barrister who specialises in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, with particular expertise in competition and consumer laws. She has previously served as Deputy Chair of the Commerce Commission, Director of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand, member of the Civil Aviation Authority and Chair of Lawyers Engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Dr Richard Janes

Dr Richard Janes is a professional company director whose involvement with the livestock industry and boards that are primarily export-focused provides him good insight into how TELARC can promote its services to businesses. Currently, he holds directorship positions on Gallagher Group Ltd, Castlepoint Station Ltd, CentrePort Ltd and VARNZ. He is Chair of Ocean Design Group Ltd and in 2004 was appointed to ASURE Ltd as Deputy Chair. He has previously served as Chair of VTL Group, Apple Exports Permits Committee, and Wools of New Zealand; and Deputy Chair of Landcorp Farming Ltd and Merino NZ Ltd.

Nigel Keith Cann

Nigel Cann is a New Zealander based in Australia who has a background in testing and accreditation procedures from his 14 years at BHP Steel and from his current role as General Manager of manufacturing at Australian Vinyls Corporation Ltd. For the past four years, he has been responsible for overseeing a major upgrade of all levels of Australian Vinyls Corporation Ltd business management system as required by the Environmental Protection Agency to reach the National Association of Testing Authorities accreditation, which is the Australian body equivalent to TELARC.
