Turner welcomes road toll moves

United Future deputy leader Judy Turner today welcomed indications that the public is getting behind efforts to cut the road toll.

Her comments follow a NZ Herald-Digipoll survey which shows that more than 72% of those polled support the use of speed cameras, concealed or otherwise, despite widespread cynicism that their real purpose is to line the Government’s coffers.

“It’s heartening to see people are serious about cutting the carnage on the roads, even if they have their doubts about the Government’s motives,” said Mrs Turner.

“Another positive move is the announcement by Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven that 40 sites around New Zealand will have speed limits varied to suit the conditions, rather than rely on the standard 100 kph limit.

“This is a sensible move that will help motorists in a practical way,” she said.
