Wilson Not Ideal As Speaker Says NZ First

New Zealand First has questioned Margaret Wilson’s appointment as Speaker of the House and expressed concern that she has had no prior experience controlling Parliament.

The New Zealand First Caucus discussed the issue today and agreed that the Government should have appointed someone with more experience.

Rt Hon Winston Peters pointed out that Assistant Speaker Ross Robertson and Deputy Speaker Clem Simich both had more experience.

“They have demonstrated that they have the ability to perform admirably in the role as Speaker.

“I doubt Ms Wilson will enjoy the unanimous support of the House or even her own party, particularly since Helen Clark advised Peter Dunne and the Greens before informing her own caucus members of the appointment.

“This is not a role for beginners with little parliamentary experience. Unfortunately, Ms Wilson has not served as a whip, a back bencher, an electorate MP or a select committee chair.

“Democracy is a robust business and the referee has to keep in touch with the play,” said Mr Peters.
