Labour takes $1m more each day in tax

National's Finance spokesman, John Key, says the latest tax revenue figures provide further evidence that the Government can afford tax cuts.

The figures for the six months from July 1 2004 to December 31, released today, show that revenue from tax is $124 million ahead of schedule.

"Basically, they show the Labour Government took $1 million more in tax on each working day than they did during the same period in 2003.

"When Michael Cullen says he cannot afford to give tax cuts, the only people he is fooling are those on his own back bench.

"This Labour Government continues to reap record revenues at a time when household debt and interest rates are rising.

"Labour can afford to give every hard-working New Zealander a tax cut, and it is about time they did," Mr Key says.
