New Zealand, Cambodia cooperate to promote labour standards

New Zealand and Cambodia's growing trade relationship is about to complemented with closer cooperation to promote improving labour standards, Progressive MP Matt Robson said today.

"Everyone knows that economic and social development go hand-in-hand, not just within nations but across borders.

"I am very proud that the Labour-Progressive government is now investing efforts to enhance workers' rights in Cambodia and to promote negotiated resolutions to labour disputes within Cambodia," Matt Robson said.

Government agency, NZAID, announced today that it will invest US$500,000 toward the International Labour Organization's efforts to help Cambodia with its labour dispute prevention and resolution work in Cambodia.

The money will be spent on training employers, union representatives, shop stewards, police, civil servants and judiciary on their rights and responsibilities relating to strikes and labour disputes. It will also help fund the Arbitration Council and pay toward a review of Cambodia's Labour Law.
