Police ‘too busy’ to act on fraudulent email in MP’s name

A fake email soliciting funds in the name of United Future MP Murray Smith has been reported to Auckland police who have said that they are too busy to handle it, the Wellington list MP revealed today.

“This is real crime. It has been reported and the police say they can’t handle it. Now that’s a serious worry,” Mr Smith said, adding that he now knew of two organisations that had received it, one of which had reported it to the police.

“I must say this is becoming an all too common refrain from the police and is very concerning as we’re talking fraud here,” he said.

Mr Smith he would now report the matter to the police himself in the hope that it would be pursued.

“This is part of a very worrying trend in terms of what the police say they can and cannot do - and it really is seriously eroding public confidence,” he said.
