Labour's Treaty Policy Not In New Zealand's Interests

Labour's Treaty policy shows that 15 years from now, we will still be mired in settling Treaty of Waitangi claims. National will do a lot better. We will settle all claims by 2010, so the nation can move on.

Don Brash has noted Labour's announcement is nothing more than a desperate election U-turn in an attempt to try to convince the electorate they acting to halt the Treaty gravy train. .

The government has failed to act in the best interests of the country when they are allowing the process to continue in such a leisurely, languid fashion. They have no drive to resolve the issues in this area. It is simply time-wasting.

Labour's policy means the Treaty train will be storming down the tracks for another 15 years.

Maori are not being given certainty over when claims will be settled, and non-Maori are being given the message that Labour is not really committed to ever settling historic claims.

The public made it clear back in 2004 that they want Treaty claims to be resolved a lot faster than is currently the case, and that they want them to be full and final (meaning they can't be re-visited at any stage). National has recognised this deep desire in the community - we will have all claims resolved in five years - by 2010, under our policy.

The Treaty is built around the ideas of government, property rights and citizenship. Where there has been a clear breach of property rights, it is right that a decent process to make amends should be put in place. National is committed to completing the process of settling historical grievances. We must put these grievances behind us if we are to stop looking backward, and start looking forward.
