Further NZ assistance in wake of Hurricane Katrina

Prime Minister Helen Clark today announced a further contribution to help those Americans affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

“I am pleased to announce a contribution of $2 million which the government will make through the Red Cross on behalf of all New Zealanders,” Helen Clark said.

“The scale of this disaster is greater than we thought just a couple of days ago. There are still thousands missing and the death toll is rising. There are over 100,000 evacuees sheltering in Red Cross shelters. Our hearts go out to those Americans who have lost loved ones and had their homes destroyed.

“The United States is always quick to help others in need in similar circumstances. This is a time for its friends, like New Zealand, to show their support.”

This contribution is in addition to the offers the government has already made to send an Urban Search and Rescue Team, a Disaster Victim Identification team or post disaster recovery personnel. Those offers have been gratefully received by the US and assessment teams are currently analysing US needs and how these personnel might be able to be best used. Many New Zealanders have already made personal donations through non-government organisations.

A senior member of the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, John Titmus, will also be leading a UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team.
