Campaign scaremongering must stop

National Party MP Katherine Rich is accusing her rivals of "preying upon the nation's most vulnerable" with a letter designed to frighten state house tenants.

"It is 'Big Brotherish' in the extreme that the Labour Party has used a list of state house tenants for a targeted misinformation campaign."

Mrs Rich is referring to the sending of personally addressed letters to state house tenants with the words 'Eviction Notice' at the top of the letter.

The letters accuse National of threatening to 'sell your house', with the words 'Eviction Notice' in bold type.

"The fliers are inflammatory, wrong and in this case have had a traumatic effect on a tenant who thought she was being evicted.

"Some of the people who've contacted me about this letter have been distraught. In my opinion, this is gutter politics.

"This kind of scaremongering shows that we need a change of government. Clearly, Labour doesn't care who it hurts or offends in its desperate bid for power.

"Prime Minister Helen Clark should apologise on behalf of the Labour Party for the letter and the Labour Party must explain," says Mrs Rich
