My Offer Still Stands - Winston Offers To Mediate

Media Release
15 September 2005

My Offer Still Stands

Tauranga MP, Rt Hon Winston Peters, earlier this afternoon offered himself as a stand in for the Prime Minister in order to bring to an end the disturbing stand off between the police and a male immigrant threatening inner city Tauranga.

The individual concerned took a woman hostage during the morning at the Devonport Hotel claiming to have bombs that would be detonated if the Prime Minister did not make herself available to speak with him.

“I am pleased that the hostage has now been released however the dislocation being caused in CBD Tauranga continues to be of considerable concern,” said Mr Peters.

“The Prime Minister may not necessarily be available at this time, but as the local member for Tauranga, I will assist my constituents and the police in any way possible to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of the community, including if necessary, entering into direct discussions with the individual personally.

“This is a earnest offer and I am awaiting instruction as to how best I can assist.

“I am hopeful of a speedy resolution to this matter and that Tauranga people and the business community can get back to their business,” concluded Mr Peters.
