Time to make Civil Defence work

National’s Civil Defence spokesman, John Carter, says Labour will have to get its act together if its new Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan is going to work.

“The plan is good but it won’t be worth the paper it’s written on if the new Minister, Rick Barker, is anything like his predecessor.

“George Hawkins was his own civil defence disaster. For example, his pathetic reaction to the devastating floods in Rangitikei, Manawatu and Taranaki early last year proved disastrous for the region and showed what a liability he was.

“Let’s see if Rick Barker can deliver anything better.

“Let’s see, for example, if he can secure sufficient funds to see that the management plan’s public awareness targets are met.

“Let’s see if he can walk where until now Labour has just talked,” says Mr Carter.
