Census recognition of New Zealanders welcomed

National Party Deputy Leader Gerry Brownlee has welcomed the Statistics New Zealand decision to allow people to identify themselves as New Zealanders in this year's Census.

"National is delighted that Kiwis will be able to say whether they identify themselves as a New Zealander in the Census. This is something that has been a long time coming, and I suspect many of us will take up the opportunity to be formally recorded as a New Zealander for the first time.

"We congratulate the Government on again adopting another National Party policy.

"I for one will definitely be ticking 'New Zealander' on census day," says Mr Brownlee.
