Funding Must Reach Target

New Zealand First health spokesperson Barbara Stewart has welcomed the funding increase in this year's Budget for elder care as a part of the confidence and supply agreement with New Zealand First, but is urging the Government to ensure that the money reaches its intended target.

“In the past, DHB’s have considered funding boosts in the elder care sector as discretionary funds and some of it has been channelled into other areas instead of where it was intended.

“This industry has been so chronically under-funded that without substantial cash injections into the sector it will simply collapse.

"New Zealand First will be doing all it can to make sure that these funding increases are ring-fenced so that the money goes directly to the providers of care for the aged.

"This financial injection into elder care is the first step towards a long term sustainable solution to the long-term problems in the aged residential care sector,” Mrs Stewart said.
