Maharey announces NZ On Air Chairman

Broadcasting Minister Steve Maharey today announced the re-appointment of Don Hunn as Chair of the NZ On Air Board for a further seven-month term ending on 31 December 2006, and acknowledged the strong governance he has provided for NZ on Air since his appointment as Chair in 2002.

“Mr Hunn’s wide knowledge and experience of public sector governance has been very valuable in steering the Board through its funding and other activities,” Steve Maharey said. “I look forward to his continuing leadership of the NZ on Air Board."

NZ On Air is established pursuant to the Broadcasting Act 1989 to reflect and develop New Zealand identity and culture by promoting programmes about New Zealand and New Zealand interests and by promoting Mâori language and culture.

Its funding requirements are also intended to ensure that the coverage of television and radio broadcasting reaches as many New Zealand communities, and people of diverse gender, ethnicity, religious and ethical beliefs, and other interests as possible.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Donald Hunn is an international public-sector consultant and former public servant, and has held senior positions including State Services Commissioner. He is currently a member of the IHC New Zealand Board and the Royal New Zealand Ballet Board, and until recently was an Executive Committee member of Friends of Te Papa Tongarewa. Mr Hunn has also presided over several public sector inquiries into issues, including the leaky building syndrome and the Work and Income Department.
