Peters names Consul-General to New Caledonia

New Zealand’s next Consul-General to New Caledonia will be career diplomat Eleanor Thomson, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said today.

The New Zealand Consul-General in New Caledonia is also accredited to French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna.

“New Zealand and the French Pacific Territories share a significant trading relationship, and have been working closely in a number of important areas such as education and health. The Consul-General plays an important role in promoting the ongoing growth of the relationship,” Mr Peters said.

Ms Thomson, who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1979, has previously been posted to Suva, Tokyo and Berlin. She is currently deputy director of the Ministry’s North Asia Division.

Ms Thomson takes up her appointment in September, replacing Belinda Brown, who returns to Wellington.
