Greens are the masters of their own misfortune

National Party Deputy Leader Gerry Brownlee says if the Green Party were really serious about restoring the integrity of Parliament, they would not have cooked up a shabby deal with Labour over the Taito Phillip Field affair.

“The Greens collaboration with Labour on this is simply inexcusable. To claim that the integrity of Parliament would be restored with a half-baked non-apology is as naïve as it is insulting.”

Mr Brownlee says it is clear from Mr Field’s non-apology that he still believes he has done nothing wrong. His statement reads: ‘I accept that members of this House have been concerned by some inferences which may have been drawn from the reporting of the Ingram report’.

“In other words, Mr Field believes the media is to blame. He is deluded and clearly in denial.

“National has absolutely no regrets for blocking the bid by Labour and the Greens to sweep the Field debacle under the carpet and pretend it never happened. We make no apologies for it.

“New Zealand politics has long been free of corruption and we must act to protect that reputation,” says Mr Brownlee.
