National pays tribute to Sir Hugh Kawharu

National Party Maori Affairs spokesman Gerry Brownlee says the National Party wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the whanau of Sir Hugh Kawharu who has died in Auckland following a brief illness.

"Sir Hugh has done so much to enhance the understanding of Maori issues in this country and he has played a key role in the advancement of significant Treaty settlements.

"Sir Hugh was a very fine gentleman - a man of great mana - who conducted himself with immense dignity. His death is a loss to all New Zealanders," says Mr Brownlee.
