Feedback called for on draft Autism Guidelines

Feedback called for on draft Autism Guidelines

Labour MP Rick Barker called on people in the Hawke's Bay interested in autism to give their feedback on new draft guidelines.

"A draft guide about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been written which is designed to act as a best practice guide on ASD in both children and adults," said Rick Barker.

The guide provides up-to-date and reliable information on identification, diagnosis, ongoing assessment, interventions and services for people with ASD. It will be a valuable tool for health, and education professionals and social service agencies.

"It is estimated that 1 person in 100 has an Autism Spectrum Disorder, with this including people who have Asperger syndrome. Based on the latest census results, approximately 1,400 people in Hawke's Bay would have ASD," said Rick Barker.

"This is an area I have a particular interest in and I strongly encourage people in Hawke's Bay to give their feedback on the draft guidelines," said Rick Barker

The draft ASD Guideline is on the Ministry of Health's website – http://www.moh.govt.nz/autismspectrumdisorder
