Turner on Burton and ACC

United Future deputy leader Judy Turner says there's a simple solution to the possibility that convicted murderer Graham Burton might be eligible for compensation payments from ACC.

"I think it's important that the principle of 'no fault' ACC payments be preserved because it's a massive benefit to all those honest, ordinary New Zealanders who suffer harm through no fault or decision of their own," she said.

"At the same time, no-one wants to see violent criminals and others who are injured through their own decision to endanger themselves through illegal activities, compensated from public money.

"Rather than ACC wasting time and money by having to go to court to deny Burton the right to any money, why not wait to see if he makes a claim, then if it's decided he is entitled, simply award him 50 cents?

"That way, we preserve an important principle and avoid rewarding the criminal.

"If anyone should get compensation, the first people in line should be Burton's victims and their families," said Mrs Turner.
