Police Management Failing Frontline Officers

Police Management Failing Frontline Officers

The latest delay in the deployment of body armour to frontline police suggests a serious failure of police management, says New Zealand First law and order spokesperson Ron Mark.

Mr Mark’s comments follow today’s announcement by Police that the roll out of stab- resistant body armour would be further delayed.

“This is yet another stuff-up resulting in a further delay in the deployment of equipment essential to protecting officers’ lives,” said Mr Mark.

“Police claim the delays are due to the supplier being unable to adequately supply enough body armour components to proceed with the roll out as planned, yet tenders for the armour contract closed in February 2005 with the requirement of delivery by June 2006.

“Delivery is not now expected to be completed until May this year, nearly a year late. What kind of Mickey Mouse supplier did they choose?

“This latest failure suggests that the real failure is a management one. Police management are responsible for protecting officers on the beat from harm, and must be held accountable.

“Perhaps it would be beneficial for the Law and Order select committee to investigate the whole debacle,” concluded Mr Mark.
