No confidence, no reporting
National’s Ethnic Affairs spokeswoman, Pansy Wong is concerned about the Asian community’s lack of confidence when it comes to reporting crimes to police.
Her comments follow media reports that calls for help from Auckland man, Austin Wong, went unanswered by police for more than seven hours.
“I am disturbed that the 111 call for help from the Wong family in Glendowie over the weekend was not immediately responded to.”
Mr Wong was allegedly assaulted by a group of taggers damaging his home, and despite his wife’s call to 111 no police showed up.
“Police often comment in the media about the perceived reluctance from our Asian communities when it comes to reporting crime.
“However, I hear about many cases where Asians have been the victims of burglary, or even bag-snatching, but they feel they haven’t been taken seriously by Police when they went to report it.
“Today’s events are a prime example of why Asians may shy away from reporting crime. If the Police have a communication mix-up or mistake they should front up.
“The Wong family deserves answers fast. The police need to show our Asian communities that they can have confidence in them.”
