Signatures against seabed mining
Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) has presented a petition to Parliament today with more than 15,000 signatures, says National MP Dr Paul Hutchison.
"To get that many signatures is an extremely fine effort for a small town like Raglan.
"KASM has been deeply concerned about large international consortia, including from China and elsewhere, causing devastation to the New Zealand coastline.
"I don't agree with a blanket ban, but I do agree with a ban around coast towns such as Raglan.
"National's Blue Green policy paper urges an evidence based approach, and the formation of an Oceans Policy with proper rules around it, to protect the environment, and a proper process to achieve a long term sustainable marine environment.
"This is an important petition. The laws around seabed mining are totally inadequate and the select committee should take the issue seriously."
