Let's not rubbish the Earth
Let's not rubbish the Earth
Ever wondered just how much rubbish you generate in a year?
This Sunday Green Party Spokesperson on Waste Nandor Tanczos will take part in an art installation in Wellington's Civic Square that will demonstrate the answer to that question.
Nandor and a team of volunteers have been busily working on creating 10 giant waste bins, which will be filled during the event, to illustrate the amount of rubbish that each New Zealander is responsible for in a year.
"Much of the rubbish that we send to the dump each year need not have been generated in the first place. A large proportion is also recyclable, but for a variety of reasons that does not happen," Nandor says.
Nandor is leading the Waste Minimisation Bill that aims to reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills. One of the main aims of the Bill, which is currently progressing through the Select Committee stages, is to get manufacturers to think about their products' entire lifecycle.
"We need to be thinking not just about the waste and packaging that is created during the production and sale process, but also about the disposal of the product at the end of its life," Nandor says.
The Earth Day event will begin at 12.30pm with the filling of the waste baskets, followed by speeches from invited guests and a picnic.
