Prisoners on drugs in drug-free unit
The Corrections Minister should explain why more than 100 prisoners have tested positive for drugs while in a 'drug-free unit', says National's Justice & Corrections spokesman, Simon Power.
He is releasing the answer to a parliamentary question which shows that in the first nine months of 2006/07, 115 prisoners tested positive for drugs while in one of the Corrections Department's drug-free units. Up to 200 test positive in an entire year.
"I understood these units were supposed to be as their title suggests - drug-free.
"Presumably prisoners go into these units to kick their habits.
"But if these figures are correct, a good proportion of them do not seem to be achieving anything like the desired effect.
"In fact, the opposite seems to be happening.
"Perhaps Damien O'Connor would like to explain how these people are managing to get their "fixes" inside these units, or are they just as leaky when it comes to contraband as other parts of our prisons seem to be under this Government."
